So, I'm told with great certainty that 'women rape to1o'. A flurry of tweets come in, people insisting that they were raped by a woman, they've been raped 'more often by women than men'.
I'm also told of female paedophiles. The twenty-something teacher who has a sexual relationship with her teenage student is both the subject of boasts among adult men, their fantasy and pornography and lurid headlines.
It is exactly the same as paedophilia and they are paedophiles, they tell us.
I'm not diminishing the frankly revolting crime this is. What damage it does may be exacerbated by the apparent willingness of the boy (or girl), his (or her) cooperation is no sign it is truly consensual. It can't be.
That there are cases such as Vanessa George, a nursery worker who became embroiled in an online relationship with a male paedophile, Colin Blanchard, and sexually abused tiny children to excite and appease him.
Myra Hindley facilitated, conspired with and assisted Ian Brady in the kidnap, rape, torture and murder children. This shows that psychopathic or deviant women exist, but maybe the children tend to be a prop in their sexual relationship - they are sacrificial offerings to their partner, not the focus.
We need to be able to see the predator's face, their modus operandi and tactics. Telling our children, and ourselves, to stifle the most primal, intuitive senses is incredibly dangerous.
These are not women. These are not our crimes. How they are reported matters and distortion of crime statistics and data are a serious concern.
